Congratulations to 2014 Mar-Del Watermelon Queen
The new 2014 Mar-Del Watermelon Queen is Miss Shelby Hurley. Shelby is the 21 year old daughter of Steve and Tina Hurley of Mardela Springs, Maryland. Shelby is a senior at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where her major is Agricultural Studies and she will graduate in May 2014. She is employed part time as a field scout for Crop Production Services, and for Wicomico County Soil Conservation Office, where she assists in writing nutrient management plans and manages conservation plans. Shelby also works on her family’s farm and helps to manage their produce stand.
Shelby’s accomplishments include, Marine Corps Student Athlete Award in 2010, Honorable Mention and MVP for Mardela High School Soccer team in 2010, Class of 2010 president for all four years, and was a member of Mardela High School’s National Honor Society. Shelby has won numerous scholarships, college, agriculture, and hobby honors. Shelby is quite accomplished both in her school, community, and in the agriculture community.
Shelby’s hobbies include ice skating, scrapbooking, crocheting, exercising, spending time with her family, attending her church, and drag racing her dad’s 1955 Chevy Belair in the Stock Eliminator class.
Her plans for the future include graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in the agriculture field and she feels that in the agriculture world her windows of opportunity are endless. Whether her future is in marketing, nutrient management, soil conservation, or teaching, she hopes to expand her own family’s farming operation. One day she plans to settle down and have a family of her own and instill in the them the same values that her parents have instilled in her growing up.
